How Rising Temperatures Affect Your Mind & Body – and How Reiki Can Help

April 26, 2025 Yuko Iwatsu

As spring unfolds into early summer, many of us welcome the warmth and light—but this shift can quietly challenge our body’s ability to stay balanced. If you’ve noticed more fatigue, irritability, or disrupted sleep lately, you’re not imagining it. These are common signs of the body adapting to environmental stress, especially rising temperatures.

The Body’s Response to Heat

  1. Poor Sleep from Heat Disruption

Warmer nights can interfere with the body’s natural cooling process, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Even a small increase in nighttime temperature can reduce deep sleep and leave you feeling tired and unfocused. Research from Journal of Physiological Anthropology shows that elevated ambient temperatures can delay the onset of sleep, reduce REM sleep, and lead to frequent nighttime awakenings.

  2. Dehydration-Related Fatigue

You may be losing fluids without realizing it. Mild dehydration (as little as 1–2% fluid loss) affects concentration, mood, and energy—even before you feel thirsty. It can also raise stress hormone levels like cortisol, adding to the sense of fatigue or overwhelm.

  3. Increased Cardiovascular Load and Irritability

As temperatures rise, blood vessels dilate to help cool the body, which puts extra pressure on the heart. This can lead to restlessness, low frustration tolerance, and a feeling of being overstimulated or emotionally reactive. A 2022 study in Frontiers in Psychology found a significant correlation between higher temperatures and increased rates of impatience, anxiety, and low frustration tolerance.

Why Emotions Fluctuate in Warmer Seasons

In traditional Chinese medicine, spring and early summer are considered periods of rising “Yang” energy—a time of movement and expansion. But if your body is already under stress, this upward energy can intensify restlessness, anxiety, or impatience.

Even from a Western standpoint, emotional regulation is closely tied to sleep quality, hydration, and nervous system balance—all of which can be challenged by heat. This is often when people begin to feel emotionally “off,” even if everything else seems fine on the surface. They may experience sudden mood shifts, lowered resilience, or difficulty focusing.

How Remote Reiki Can Help You Stay Balanced

Remote Reiki supports your body’s natural ability to adapt. Regular sessions can:

  • Activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping you feel grounded and calm

  • Promote better sleep and rest, even when external conditions are overstimulating

  • Reduce the internal “heat” that often builds from stress, tension, or emotional buildup

Clients often describe feeling lighter, clearer, and more centered after a session. This gentle energy reset can help you move through the season with more ease and awareness.
